Measure the full product.
Include lids, caps, bows, decorations, cake boards or sticks. For a set, arrange every item in the intended layout and measure that complete arrangement. Record length, width and height in one consistent unit.
Separate inside and outside dimensions.
Internal dimensions describe the usable space; external dimensions include the construction. Do not assume a supplier's catalogue uses the same convention. Write “internal” or “external” beside each measurement and confirm it in the specification.
Allow for inserts and removal.
Inserts, wraps and cushioning use space. The clearance needed depends on the product and construction, so there is no universal allowance to add to every box. Test the actual item in a sample, including taking it out again.
Check the delivery system.
If the item will travel by courier, size the protective outer packaging around the finished gift box and cushioning. Presentation and shipping protection should be assessed together.
